Starting out as a military brat living all around the country, I made it through homelessness, and a knife fight with a crackhead that severed the tendon on my left thumb to attend art school and move to NYC for an art career.
Originally wanting to be a comic artist, a few interviews with the major companies disillusioned me, and I started tattooing while I searched for a "real career".
Only I loved it. I changed my life and I've since made it into hundreds of magazines and books.
As the twin towers fell, I struggled through brain cancer, chemotherapy, and radiation, while I married my girlfriend Monica Castillo.
Seven years later, she died in a hit and run, and I ended up moving all around the country in a quest to find myself.
Now, 20 years after I started tattooing, I write books (3 are out so far), do art for comics, books, and magazines, and own half a tattoo shop with my business partner Paul Tochluk. If you're into it, you can check out my stuff here or see even more on my personal website danhenk.com.
