This was the second painting I did for the band Shai Hulud. They had just been picked up by Relapse Records, and wanted to go all out. I initially spent 60 hours on an oil painting of a hearty bursting open in a chest, but they got a new singer and he complained that was the concept of the last album. So they said they'd use it on a re-issue of their debut, but could I do this instead. I did, was 35 hours into it, when I came down with brain cancer. I called Matt Fox, who is the main guy in the band, and he told me to just get better but I insisted I would finish it. I did, and Relapse suggested the hot new trend was digital covers, so they thanked me in credits, put it on a hoodie and sold it without my knowledge, but never used that art for the album. River of Blood. Oil on canvas. 20" by 20".
