Combining my love of the ancient evil in the work of Lovecraft, with the alternative historical work of people like Graham Hancock, (Fingerprints of the Gods is excellent), I made the trip down to Mexico to visit Chichen Itza before I started my story. Taking plenty of reference photos, and scaling the ruins (back in the days when they let you climb the ruins), I came back with a feel for the ancient, mysterious, city I would illustrate..
